  • How to Stop A Dog
    From Chewing

Chewing on objects is a normal activity for dogs especially when they are puppies and they're teething.

Chewing can mean the dog is bored or it can simply be an activity that is pleasureable and rewarding.

However, chewing is generally destructive - particularly if your dog is chewing carpets, furniture, and your expensive shoes!

Also, make sure electrical wiring or cables are not exposed and available for chewing as well. They can result in serious or fatal injury or otherwise cause considerable damage to your home.

Because chewing is an inappropriate behavior - and a bad habit - it should be corrected early with appropriate dog behavior training.

How to stop a dog or puppy from chewing:

Here are some general guidelines to follow to stop a dog or puppy from chewing:

Keep a watchful eye on your dog or puppy and if you see it is chewing something you don't want it to chew (or is about to chew) then correct it immediately.

You may have to distract your dog, by making a noise with a shaker can, for example, to interrupt the chewing.

Be sure to take away the object that your dog is chewing on and subsitute it with a suitable, safe chewing toy or chew treat. (Do not substitute the object with an old shoe or old clothing since your dog will not be able to differentiate between what is old and not needed and what is new.)

Be careful to give your dog or puppy a chew toy or treat that is safe and doesn't pose a choking hazard.

And be sure to keep an eye on your dog or puppy - especially while it is chewing the chew toy or treat.
